Lockers, lifted, leather, and it's green. Seriously, any reason I shouldn't buy this thing?

I mean, besides the fact that it'd take me 8 hours to drive it home...

Bonus Motivation: Biggie mentioned an LX450 in Hypnotize. He also had a red Landcruiser.

It's interesting. I don't think the keyless entry was a Lexus option, but I can be wrong. Looks like some red tape between the filter box and manifold.

2 suggestions:

- If you never driven one, try to find a LX450 or 80s series near you, go test driving it just to make sure it's right for you.

- Since it's a canadian truck, ask for some undercarriage pictures. You'll be able to see the extend of the rust and the new suspension intstallation too.

Excellent idea for the undercarriage pictures. I spotted the red tape, probably not a big deal, just some rubber or plastic that's cracked? The keyless entry could be aftermarket, which is often a big source of headaches.

This truck was listed for $8000 a couple of weeks ago (on eBay with a $12k BIN) but they've re-listed at a lower price.I'm tempted, but it's so goddamn far - I'd have to take the plane to Toronto and then drive it home. Planning and prep will be key.

About the lift, I'm curious about it - OME doesn't make a 4", they make a 3". This lift requires the caster kit, steering damper, etc etc. It would probably also need the longer panhards and trailing arms to make it work properly, right?

Not to be a buzzkill, but set aside about half the purchase price to do some preventative maintenance done. Engine bay looks rusty. What's underneath?

Here is a good basic guide.

If it really is a 4". I did the caster correction on my 2.5" kit. Drives nice and straight down the road. No pulling at all. Has the steering dampener as well. You can run 35's with it no problem.

For an Ontario truck, the engine bay looks normal, good even, but you're right that I should budget for some maintenance (change all fluids, etc).

Older motor, but a great truck. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/cto/469556…

Needs the OEM air filter put back on, but low miles and a rear tire carrier are nice. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/wvl/cto/473184…

Yah, they just tend to have a lot of little leaks. I'd set aside money for axle seals if there is any weeping. For the Southwest that engine bay looks like a ton of rust, but it's all relative to the area.

You're lucky - you live where there's no rust and supply is much greater. I honestly feel like Toyota/Lexus sold maybe a dozen cars per year up here... good examples are few and far between.

I bet. I know working on a truck that's spent even a year in a more rust prone area is tougher to work on. (A buddy had the same gen 4runner as me and everything was tougher on his truck to fix) Happy hunting and if you ever do a fly and drive let me know if I can be of any help.

The crack on the intake is actually kind of a pain. its a sign that the intake hose is cracked and leaking and will throw codes if air gets into the engine downstream of the air sensor near the airbox. The replacement part is hundreds. its common.

You know how I feel about it. Though having owned one for a while now I will give you the two things that im bummed about.

1. The mileage is terrible. as in I got 12.8 at my fillup this morning, mostly highway. granted im undergeared with 33's and a 3 inch lift blah blah blah. The trouble is this means they have terrible range off road, like 200-220 miles tops. They are also slow as dogs, but you get used to it. its actually part of the reason I got one; to calm me down and make me take a more relaxed set.

2. Its a lot of truck which means a lot of ongoing maintenence. They will last a long time but there is a lot to do to keep them running well. transfer case fluids annually, diff oil annually, coolant at least every other year (depending on the condition of the cooling system I would go annually and ONLY use toyota red), gotta keep the steering knuckles greased, 4 prop shaft joints to keep lubed, gotta keep on top of rust, etc, etc. Its a commitment. its worth it if you need the capability though, or even if you just like having the reserve capability.

On the other hand, they burrow into your soul when you get one, the backs are tall and spacious and make for great kids play pens, they will take all your gear and then some without complaint and they will make you feel capable without being smug.

I think the previous owner was a member on ih8mud. He had a lot of work done by some members there. I still have a window sticker on it, although I am not a member of that forum. The lack of a roof rack is bummer.

The lack of roof rack is a blessing, trust me. The factory rack is garbage and I wouldn't even trust that up there. it can leak, its wobbly and it makes noise off road, be thrilled that its gone. a roof rack delete is on my short list.

Thanks for the tips. Is there some sort of special service manual that one should own, beyond what comes with the vehicle?

I sent an email to the seller and will perhaps follow up with a call this evening. I'd like to know more about the truck, and who knows, maybe my wife will release the funds! Ha ha ha ha!

There is the FSM (factory Service Manual) that is HORRENDOUSLY expensive (like $300) but a nice mud member put his online. I can't recall where I found it but I would be happy to share mine with you as a downloadable pdf. Its the fully detailed manual the techs use to service the vehicle its like 3 books of 300 pages each.

I have a love hate relationship with these cars. Think they look fantastic. Cant think of another car that still looks this good based on a 20 year old design. There was one for sale by my house last year that I must have visited everyday for a week. I really wanted this car. The only hangup was the head gasket failure that plagues these engines. It was at the right mileage for having the failure and hadn't been repaired by the owner. If I had the know how to fix it then it would have made sense. OP- great looking truck. Hope you enjoy it. Here is a picture of the one I was eyeing.

It's an old LC, so I will agree here that it may be high maintenance, but most of it you can do it by yourself. They are solid truck that can run forever when well maintain or will rust in peace here in Canada. If you ever drive a 60s series , a 80s series or LX450 are kind of fast, but gas mileage kind of suck.

I have no idea if at one point it was up there and got deleted along the way. I'm looking for some other options to carry my snowboards. Maybe a gutter rack system. Just don't expect perfection in a 17 year old car. A few things are not working, minor stuff. Factory speakers apparently go bad in all of them and replacement speakers are not readily available.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > dixy2k
11/11/2014 at 16:15

Kinja'd!!!0

You can tell if its a delete because there will be obvious screw holes (unless they went all in and resprayed). Some trucks didn't have roof racks, but its rare. I would get a yakima gutter mount for your boards or just carry them inside. I have used both, but getting up on that roof is a pain the butt and I prefer not to do it. The truck isn't "water tight" anymore anyway so whats a little extra interior moisture?

Kinja'd!!! dixy2k > HammerheadFistpunch

You made me curious about it. Upon closer inspection of the roof I cannot find any signs of repair, patch up job, sanding or anything. The roof needs a paint job, it aged a lot in the sun. If it had a newer paint job on it I would still be on the fence about the roof rack being deleted, but now I am almost certain it did not come with one from the factory.

When I was looking at different models on ebay, I noticed a pattern at that time. All the trucks with factory lockers (front and rear button on the dashboard) did not have roof racks. My sample was not great, I would say maybe 10 vehicles. Mine has the lockers. I preferred the lockers over the roof rack when I got mine. I may be totally off with my remark, but it's simply what I found by simply looking at all those for sale on ebay.

I just want to inject and say you *SHOULD* do all the maintenance, but even if you aren't so great at it, these trucks will keep going for a long, long time.

I've had mine for almost 5 years and, yes, have had to keep on the steering knuckles, but everything else has been neglected and she's still going super strong.

Which reminds me, I need to get these things done! Thanks for the reminder Hammer!

I'm a bit anal about this type of maintenance, even if i hate that about myself because it means there is ALWAYS something to do on it. I should just re-baseline at the new year and make it a big annual event.
